Step-by-Step Guide to Changing a Tire

1. Find a Safe Spot: Pull over to a flat, safe area away from traffic. Engage the parking brake and, if you have them, place wheel wedges to prevent rolling.
2. Remove the Hubcap (if applicable): Use the flat end of the lug wrench to gently pry off the hubcap.
3. Loosen the Lug Nuts: Use the lug wrench to turn each lug nut counterclockwise. Loosen them slightly but don’t remove them completely yet.
4. Position the Jack and Lift the Car: Place the jack at the designated lift point in your VW’s manual, usually along the vehicle’s frame. Raise the vehicle until the flat tire is about 6 inches off the ground. Never place any part of your body under the vehicle while it’s elevated​. Tires EasyDMV.ORG.
5. Remove the Lug Nuts and Flat Tire: Fully unscrew and set aside the lug nuts. Then, gently pull the flat tire off the hub.
6. Mount the Spare Tire: Align the spare tire with the lug bolts, and push it onto the hub. Hand-tighten each lug nut to secure the spare temporarily.
7. Lower the Car and Tighten the Lug Nuts: Use the jack to lower the car back to the ground, then use the lug wrench to fully tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to ensure even pressure.
8. Replace the Hubcap: If your VW has hubcaps, pop it back into place.
